The Georgia Mountains Center Theater is in jeopardy again.

Dear Patrons,

The Gainesville City Council is seriously considering leasing the entire Georgia Mountains Center to Brenau University for additional school space.  We are safe for our 2012 season as we have already signed contracts, but have been told that no contracts are being issued beyond that.  Brenau has said that the theater will remain as rentable space, but we have no guarantees as to cost or availability beyond 2012.  While we are grateful for the positive impact Brenau has in Northeast Georgia on higher education and the arts, we fear that this take over could leave many community groups without a viable venue.  Not only would this change negatively impact us but also every other group previously or currently using the Georgia Mountains Center, be it performances, recitals, pageants, gospel singings, book or clothing sales, thrift sales, gun shows, meetings or what have you.  There is no other facility anywhere in the area that provides space for such events and entertainment.  The Georgia Mountains Center was built from federal funds paid with all of our tax dollars and was never intended to be profitable for Gainesville or North Georgia.  These are tough economic times and we understand that the city of Gainesville is trying to be financially sound.  However, when we look to the future, we see the destruction of a much needed community venue that would never be replaced.  The restructuring of the Georgia Mountains Center for school purposes would never make it suitable for anything near its current use as a public facility.
